Illinois Wesleyan University proved to be just the right fit for Steve Gualandri. It gave the recent St. Bede Academy graduate the opportunity to compete in track and field and offered the academics program he wanted to study.
“I learned about their excellent biology program, I was interested in the fact they have theater and that it was a liberal arts school and I think I could continue to run track,” said Gualandri, who signed with the Titans Friday morning at St. Bede. “I feel Illinois Wesleyan is a good choice because it has everything I’m looking for.”
Gualandri capped his prep career in style with a fourth-place State medal in the 300 hurdles. He ran a time of 40.28 in the IHSA 1A finals. He was the fifth seed coming in, having won the Bureau Valley Sectional.
He also competes in the triple jump with a season’s best 41-3 3/4.
“Any time a young person can continue something that they really enjoy at the next level is very exciting,” St. Bede coach Mike Skoflanc said. “Steve has worked really hard ever since his freshman year and all that hard work paid off with his medal performance at the state track meet this year.
“I believe Steven is going to be a great addition to the IWU track program and I think he will be able to contribute right away. He’s a natural leader and he has a tremendous work ethic both on and off the track. That’s why he is so successful and in my opinion why he will be such a bright spot for the IWU men’s track program.”
Skoflanc believes Gualandri has unlimited potential in both hurdles and triple jump and anticipates him being able to run any of the sprint relays as well.
“I’m certainly going to miss having Steven around every day, but I am also very excited about his signing and also very proud of how good Steven made himself through all of his hard work,” Skoflanc said. “I would just want to wish Steven continued success both in the classroom and on the track at IWU.”
