The pulpit

When you were born, you had no control over your circumstances. Over the family you were born into, whether rich and well educated or poor and uneducated. Over your ethnic background or your parents’ religious background, whether that be Protestant, Catholic, Islam or Humanist (Atheist). Whether in an abusive family or a loving family. With good health or poor health.

But one thing is certain, you were not born a Christian. Another thing that is certain: You were born with a sin nature.

Religion is an attempt by man to earn his salvation. Christianity is based on what God has done and only He could do to provide salvation for sinful fallen man. No one is good enough to gain entrance into Heaven. The Ten Commandments show us how far we fall short of God’s standards. Jesus said for one to enter Heaven he must be “born again.” But we must not remain babies. Peter said to “grow up in your salvation.” Romans 12: 2 says “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” May I make a challenge to the churches in America today, a list of things that should distinguish Christians from the world.

• The world. The church.

• Abortion, the killing of the innocent. Speak up on the behalf of the unborn and partial born.

• Pornography. Purity.

• Socialism. God established government.

• Homosexuality. Marriage: one man and one woman.

• Government run schools. Godly education.

• Corrupt government. Is our government a reflection of “we the people.”

• Cross dressing. Distinction between male and female way of dress.

• Gender confusion. God is not a God of confusion.

• Ignorance of Scriptures. Study to show yourself approved.

• Fornication. Sex outside of marriage forbidden.

• Immodesty. Modest apparel.

• Divorce. Marriage to be honored.

• Evolution. Creation.

• Excessive busyness. “Be still and know that I am God.”

• Broad gate. Narrow gate.

• Corruption. Salt of the earth.

• Hollywood. Set no unclean thing before our eyes.

• Racism. One race, the human race.

• Rebellion. Submit to authority.

• Drunkenness. Sobriety.

• A variety of ungodly traits. The Love Chapter.

• Grumbling. Contentment.

• Adultery. Undefiled.

• Excessive entertainment. Moderation.

• Partiality. Justice.

• Goats. Sheep.

• The Lottery. Do not covet.

• Cheating. Integrity.

• Pride. Humility.

• Cowardliness. Courage.

• Flaunting sexual perversion. Strong families and abstinence until marriage.

• Moral decay. Grow in the grace and knowledge of God.

• No accountability. Heaven or Hell.

The purpose of the pulpit? Paul gave Timothy this charge, “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.” The responsibility of those who sit in the pews? James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Those on both sides of the pulpit have 52 opportunities a year to “grow in the grace in knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” -II Peter 2:18. There is no such thing as instant maturity.
