The last hurdle

Logan Hoffert had a season they will be talking about and looking back at for years to come in the track and field program at Bureau Valley High School.

The Storm senior qualified for the state finals in three events and medaled in each one of them.

He placed eighth in the triple jump, ninth in the 300 hurdles and took part in the first Bureau Valley relay team to medal at state as part of the Storm’s eighth-place 4x400 relay.

Those numbers all add up as being named as the 2013 BCR Male Athlete of the Year.

Of all the events he has competed in, the 300 hurdles is easily his favorite. He relishes the challenge of the event that is more than running against an opponent.

“It’s just not like straight running,” he said. “You have an obstacle in your way. People think it’s just hurdling. There’s so much form into it, so much technique that goes and so much work that goes into that people don’t know about it. I just love it, I guess.”

The 300s also proved to be his most frustrating at the state finals. While he was seeded ninth, he led the race for the first 200 meters before clipping the top of a hurdle and losing his balance. He settled for ninth with a time of 41.07, good enough to secure the final spot on the medal stand.

He had a run a personal best of 40.27 in the prelims, which duplicated would have landed him fourth in the finals.

“The 300 hurdle race did not end how he wanted it but he has been so great all year. It will sting for a bit but he will realize in the future that his performance at state was a remarkable one,” Bureau Valley coach Nick Hartz said.

While he initially was very disappointed in not finishing better in the 300 hurdles at State, Hoffert realized how blessed he is to have received three State medals this year and four in his career.
