Lauri Bitting’s third-grade classroom at Bureau Valley South was once again filled with the cheeping of quail. Bitting teaches an embryology unit to her class by using incubated chicken, turkey and duck eggs but this year she used an assortment of Bobwhite and Coturnix quail eggs. The students waited 20 days for the eggs to hatch. The students realized that one of the baby quail had different markings and after talking with the breeders found out that it was a Texas A&M quail, which are generally raised for consumption and are all white when mature. Bitting will raise the quail until they mature and then she releases them into the wild, but if the all white bird turns out to be the A&M quail, she will keep it on her farm.
