NEPONSET — Neponset Pride will host "Yoga Around the Gazebo" on June 20 in Bertelsen Park in downtown Neponset.
A beginner yoga class for all ages will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Neponset native Carol Golby-Saunders is offering a free yoga session to all area residents.
Golby-Saunders, who grew up on a farm south of Neponset, has taught yoga in Show Low, Ariz., where she and her husband, Dave, reside, and for the past year has been teaching yoga part-time in The Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. She is a certified Hatha and Yoga of the Heart instructor, is registered with Yoga Alliance, and has been teaching yoga since 1998.
She and her husband Dave will be visiting her dad, John Golby, and other relatives in the area, and thought it would be fun to offer the free classes in Neponset. Previous yoga classes have been offered in Neponset in 2008 and 2010 by Golby-Saunders and were attended by all age groups — from small children to senior citizens.
The Neponset yoga classes will feature an integrative, gentle, non-competitive and playful style of yoga for men, women and children. Area residents of all ages will learn stretching, breathing and relaxation techniques that can be used in the office or at home. She suggests that interested persons bring a yoga mat, rug or towel to the classes. She also suggests wearing comfortable clothing. For those less mobile, just bring yourself and Carol will teach you how to stretch while seated in a chair or while using a chair to help you keep your balance.
According to Golby-Saunders, the health benefits of yoga are significant. “Yoga can help to reduce stress, increase energy levels, improve balance and focus one’s attention.” She adds that “Even if you don’t plan to participate and you’re curious, feel free to stop by to say hello!”
The gazebo, built in 2012, was dedicated last August in memory of Carol’s mother, Barbara Golby. Carol was not able to get back to Neponset at that time to attend the ceremony, so she thought it would be fun to offer the yoga event at the gazebo.
Refreshments will be served after the session.
In case of rain, the event will be held at Neponset Community Building, one block west of Bertelsen Park.
