Wow! What a busy weekend it was! There were activities throughout the county, and fortunately, Mother Nature seemed to cooperate, for the most part.
I attended a Sheffield Bike-a-thon, which was organized as a fundraiser for the Veterans Park Playground Project, and then later in the day, I went to the Sheffield Fire Department’s open house. Not only were both of these events very nice, but it was especially fun to see my Sheffield friends and neighbors. That’s one of the best part about these hometown activities — not only does your attendance help in fundraising efforts, but it’s great to visit with your pals who you don’t get to see very often.
If you or your organization is having an activity and you’d like the BCR to cover your event, give us a call at 815-875-4461. While I can’t promise we will make it to each and every activity in the county, we do our best. Also, please know we welcome your photos of these events as well. Send them to our news folder at firstname.lastname@example.org. Give us a call if you have questions.
I drove by the Alexander Park Pool in Princeton the other day, and even though I was wearing a light jacket, there were quite a few children who were braving the not-so-temperate climate to have fun at the pool. It was fun to watch them ... and made me take a few steps back down Memory Lane when spending a summer day at the pool was nearly an every day occurrence.
And while I don’t want to harp on this ... If you are an adult whose children/grandchildren are swimming at our area pools, please take a moment or two to remind them of water safety rules — that goes for any children who are around any water at all. Who knows ... your reminder could be the words that save a young person’s life.
Also, as adults, we know it’s fun to head out in the boat for some fishing and fun, but remember a ton of alcohol doesn’t mix well with this type of activity. Be safe! Your family and friends are counting on you to come home safe and sound.
It looks like congratulations are in order as Festival 56 celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Wow! It seems like yesterday when we watched in awe, as the first season played in Princeton. Many great things have happened in the past 10 years, and I wish Festival 56 and all who are involved with it much continued success.
When I think back of all the great productions, actors, actresses and musicians I’ve seen throughout the past 10 years, it’s really amazing we have this opportunity in our own backyard. If you haven’t taken advantage of this fun-filled venue yet, maybe it’s time to check out this year’s productions. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
I’ve had quite a few calls and emails from folks who are anxious for our Summer 2013 edition of Illinois Valley Living. It’s looking great, and it will be out soon. I’ll keep you posted.
A couple of special days coming up this week ...
• Friday is Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag on that day in 1777. May we all fly it proudly!
• Sunday is Father’s Day — a day to honor all the special males who have made a difference in our lives. Whether it’s your dad, your grandfather, your uncle, a friend or a neighbor, Father’s Day is a great time to let them know how much they mean to you. As you search for just the right gift, please try to shop locally if you can.
Thought for this weekend: “It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” Anne Sexton.
Have a great week, my friends. Take some time to enjoy your front porch, your deck, your patio or your yard. Breathe. Exhale. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
