Big I Junior Classic set for Friday

The Hartauer Insurance Agency will sponsor a qualifying tournament for the 45th Trusted Choice Big I Junior Classic on Friday at Spring Creek.

The tournament is open for all junior golfers whose birthday does not occur before August. Winners of the event will earn a spot in the Illinois finals in Pekin. Entry forms are available at local golf courses or by contacting Dick Martuzzo at 815-223-1795.

IV Jr. golf: Some of the young golfers teeing up for the Big I play in the Illinois Valley Junior Golf League at Spring Creek. The Play Day of Monday’s event was Odd Holes. Winning golfers were:

6-8 years old: girls - Paige Pyszka 20, Aleanna Mendoza 21, Alyssa Tori 21; boys - Logan Potthoff 16, Seth Cooper 30; low gross - Potthoff, 24, Pyszka 31.

9-11 years old: girls - Ali Cuicci 28, Gracie Cuicci 31; boys - Ian Roach 22, Nathan Potthoff 27, Trenton Acuncius 28 Nathaniel Mrowicki 33; low gross - Ali Cuicci 50, Roach 42.

12-13 years old: girls - Kelli Kennedy 27; boys - Matthew Hoscheid 22, John Potthoff 24, Peyton Pyszka 27; low gross - Kennedy 52, Hoscheid, Potthoff 47.

14-17 years old: girls - Gabby Mendoza 24 (birdie #8), Stephanie Wilson 25 (birdie #9); boys - Ryan Ott 22 (birdie #8), Joe Toner 24 (birdie #8); low gross - Wilson 44, Ott 41, Toner 41.

• The Jimmy D: The 31st annual Jimmy D Golf Day will be held July 14 at Spring Creek and Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby. The outing is named for Jimmy DeAngelo, who died in 1983 at the age of 37 after fighting cancer. The proceeds from this event will be devoted to the building of the surgical center currently under construction St. Margaret’s Hospital. Last year’s event raised $20,480 and in 30 years has raised more than $620,000.

The golfer donation is $90 prepaid or $100 if paid on July 14, which includes cart rental, green fees, refreshment and door prizes. Golfers will play in sixsomes. For more information, call Diane Janz at 815-664-7260.

• Jay Braida Memorial: The 4th annual Jay Braida Memorial Golf Open will be held July 13 at Hunter’s Ridge. This year’s recipient is Danny Gelsomino, a 1987 Princeton High School graduate and father of two battling cancer. Entry fee is $60, including 18 holes of golf, cart, dinner and prizes. League roundup: Winning golfers for the Most 5s Play of the Day for Monday’s Wyaton Ladies Day were Mary Thompson, Irene Marciniak and Phyllis Miller. .... Bonnie Skaggs had a low net 33 and Joyce Goodrich shot the most putts in this week’s Indian Hills Women’s League.

Chip shots: This weekend’s events include the 11th annual Tony Bonnell Memorial Golf Outing Saturday at the Mendota Golf Club. The event is sponsored by the “Road Runner” team of the Relay for Life of Bureau County in memory of team member, Tony Bonnell, who died in 2002 from kidney cancer. The outing this year will be dedicated to Michael Fonderoli, relative and friend of members of the “Road Runner” team, who died in January, 2013 in a snowmobile accident. ... The 17th annual Bruin Golf Classic tees off Saturday at Spring Creek. All proceeds will be used to support the mission of St. Bede Academy.
