WYANET — The fifth annual Nancy Jo Olds-Bohm 5K run/walk will be held July 13, and will carry on the tradition of benefiting local nonprofit organizations.

“The race serves as an opportunity for us to honor our friend, Nancy, who died of breast cancer 6 years ago, while raising money for two good causes – ultimately giving back to the community,” said Karen Russell, race director. “The NJOB 5K committee will donate all race proceeds this year to the Believe Foundation and the Wyanet Community Club.”

The Believe Foundation was founded in Princeton in 2008 with a mission to provide patients with customized wigs and make-up application to hide the effects of cancer and other diseases. When the organization first started they provided 2-3 wigs per month. This past year they provided on average 7 wigs per month to individuals of all ages from the Bureau, LaSalle and Putnam counties.

The Wyanet Community Club is an organization that provides free family entertainment and support in the Village of Wyanet.

The Nancy Jo Olds-Bohm Event was started by four of Nancy’s Wyanet High School girlfriends – Margaret DeVenney, Julie Farraher, Lori Graham and Karen Russell. “Nancy was always active with the Wyanet Summer Festival. We wanted to continue her legacy while helping others in the area at the same time,” said Russell. The event consists of the 5K run/walk, a 1 mile memory walk, kids’ fun run and raffles. In the first four years of the Event, the NJOB committee has been able to donate over $21,000.

Raffle tickets will be sold in advance and on the day of the race for the following items: first prize — an overnight stay at Embassy Suites plus dinner at a fine dining restaurant in Peoria; second prize — six months of wellness massages along with infra red sauna sessions at Sophisticuts Salon & Spa (a $345 value); and third prize — 4 Peoria Chief tickets plus a gift certificate to a local pub. These tickets are available at the Wyanet Locker.

Before, during and after the race the public is invited to view an assortment of additional raffle items such as wine baskets, a pedal pull trailer from TCI & Kory Farm Equipment, Anytime Fitness six-month membership, various gift certificates, Precious Moments and Longaberger items. Tickets for these items may be purchased on the day of the race under the Wyanet Park Pavilion. Winners will be drawn following the race.

The race will start and end at the Wyanet Memorial Park. The course loops through the streets and is fast with mostly flat terrain and only a few gentle hills. The race is electronically timed and features water stations, splits at the first and second mile markers and refreshments after the race. The kids fun run will be held immediately following the 5K and consists of a half block run that is electronically timed.

Customized T-shirts are guaranteed to all participants who register by Monday. Race results will be available within 48 hours of the race at www.starvedrockrunners.org.

Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female 5K winners as well as the top male and female Wyanet resident 5K winners. Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female winners in each division. The age divisions are: 13 and younger, 14-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 & over. Ribbons and treats are awarded to all kid fun run participants.

The entry fee is $15 for the 5K and 1 mile memory walk prior to Monday and the kids fun run fee is $5. Participants can obtain a registration form at www.oldsbohm5k.com. Race registration and packet pickup will be at the Wyanet Memorial Park on Friday, July 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on race day from 7 to 7:45 am. The 5K and 1 mile memory walk will begin at 8 am. The kid’s fun run will begin immediately following the 5K at approximately 9 a.m.
