Prokup to play softball for St. Mary’s

It was love at first sight for Barbi Prokup.

The recent St. Bede Academy graduate has committed to play softball for St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Ind. It was love for golf that helped steer her there.

“I used to attend a golf camp at St. Mary’s and the first time I saw the campus I fell in love. It is a beautiful campus and they have great academics,” said Prokup, who plans to study psychology.

Prokup said she picked the school for its academics first, then turned her attention to softball on the heels of the Lady Bruins’ run to the IHSA 2A State Tournament.

“The option for softball was not something I considered at first. The people at St. Mary’s encouraged me to do something and I felt softball was a good fit,” said the St. Bede second baseman, an all-BCR pick who batted .303 for her dad’s Lady Bruins.

The Prokup family are not necessarily big Notre Dame fans, but Prokup said, “we are now,” hoping to catch some Irish football with her family.

Golf will not be a part of the equation at St. Mary’s for the 2012 BCR Golfer of the Year.

“I was lucky enough to the opportunity to play both sports. Considering our recent softball success, I decided to play softball. I like being a teammate whereas golf is more of an individual sport,” she said.

Prokup said she also considered Loyola and a few other schools for their academics while McKendree, Cardinal Stitch and Quincy provided her with options to play golf.
