PRINCETON – Looking for a little something more than your traditional red, white and blue for the Fourth of July?
How about something with a little dread, horror and creepiness?
On Wednesday, “You Are Not Alone” will have a pre-screening at the Apollo Theater in Princeton at 10 p.m.
The movie was made by Bureau Valley graduate and former Walnut resident Derek Mungor and features Walnut as the backdrop for much of the scary events.
And not only the village is featured in the movie.
Walnut residents also took part either as extras or with small speaking roles.
“’You Are Not Alone’ sets out to tell a suspense/horror story in a new and interesting way,” Mungor said. “At its core, it is very much a story about family and returning to the place you grew up to find that it’s not so much that the places have changed, but you have.”
“You Are Not Alone” is about college graduate Natalie, who returns to Walnut, her hometown, over the Fourth of July. The night she arrives, she is stalked by a sociopathic killer.
Many Bureau County residents have a special interest in the movie as they helped pay for it. Last summer Mungor looked to raise funds on the Kickstarter website, and 121 backers provided $8,098 for the movie to be filmed during last year’s Fourth of July.
“We shot for a solid two weeks during the hottest part of the year, but beyond that, we couldn’t have asked for a better time to be in the area,” Mungor said. “Everyone in the community was very accommodating and supportive.”
Mungor said the public support was crucial.
“It could not have happened any other way,” he said. “The film is a product of as much as it is about this area.”
After Wednesday’s pre-screening, Mungor hopes his movie is accepted at some of the top tier movie festivals in the United States and Canada. Distribution of the movie is planned for the Halloween season.
Is there more horror in Mungor’s future?
Not immediately, at least.
Immediately following the premiere, Mungor is going to be directing a television pilot set in Pittsburgh.
“And after wrapping up the distribution of ‘You Are Not Alone,’ I will be taking a much-needed break,” he said.
