Interning at the Bureau County Farm Bureau
Hello! My name is Gracelynn Dale, and I am the 2013 Bureau County Farm Bureau summer intern. This summer I have had the privilege of job-shadowing Jill Frueh as well as being a part of many projects and events with the Bureau County Farm Bureau.
As soon as I began my internship, I was traveling throughout the county with our Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, Sara Hildebrand, to put on different presentations talking about agriculture, including butterflies, crops and livestock. In May, Jill and I made the trip up to Portage Park Elementary School in Chicago to present to our fourth grade Adopt a Classroom. It was so much fun, since not only were we presenting the students with information, but we also got to work on activities with them, like making butter, growing our own little soybean plants and putting together “Horse Feed Sacks” filled with food and candy to represent the nutrients horses need to survive. Since then, we have prepared for and put on our week-long Summer Ag Institute for teachers as well as our Foundation Tractor Trek and Golf Outing fundraisers.
As the summer continues, I will be helping get ready for the Bureau County Farm Bureau’s 100th year anniversary, which will be taking place next year. I have already began reading through past board meeting minutes to learn more about the history of our county’s Farm Bureau in hopes of adding to a history book that was previously put together in 1989 for the 75th anniversary celebration. This has been one of my most rewarding experiences as the summer intern, since I have been able to learn more about the activities my Grandpa Alan Dale was involved in when he served as the Farm Bureau county president. Being a part of the Bureau County and Illinois Farm Bureaus has been such an important aspect in his life, and my internship is giving me the chance to better understand and appreciate all of his hard work.
