One former Bureau Valley cross country runner won Saturday’s Nancy Jo Olds-Bohm 5K Race. A current Storm tracker was the first female finisher.
Derrick Johnson, a 2013 BVHS graduate and present member of the Eastern Illinois University’s cross country and track teams, clocked a winning time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds. He placed second a year ago with a time of 17:09 behind Spring Valley’s Scott Janusick.
Regan Weidner, 16, of Buda, was the first female finisher with a time of 21:15. The BVHS junior to be also won in 2012 with a time of 19:58, sixth overall. Julie Speck, 39, of Chicago took second for females in 21:50. Ashley Atwell, 21, was the first female finisher from Walnut in 22:38.
Don Guier (25:36), 60, a Bureau Valley coach, and Katelin Johnson (23:51), a senior to be at BVHS, were the first Wyanet finishers.
Kane Eastwood, 18, of Walnut placed second overall with a time of 18:33. He was followed by Joe Bornac, 46, of LaSalle (1838), Dan Kasperski, 39, of Oglesby (19:07) and Andrew Smith, 17, of Walnut (19:39). Other top 10 finishers included seventh place Kurt Garvin, 27, of Princeton (20:17) and 10th Charlie Lotspeich, 16, of Bradford (20:58).
This year’s event had a record 286 participants signed up, included the kids run, 1-mile memory walk, and 5K. There were 181 participants to cross the 5K finish line.

BV Booster Color Race: The Bureau Valley Booster Club will hold its Color Race 5K/Walk on Aug. 3 in Manlius. Race time is 8 a.m. from Bureau Valley High School. DePue 5K Run/Walk: The third annual 5K Run/Walk held in conjunction with the 2013 boat races at Lake DePue will start at 8 a.m. July 27. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the north fire station in DePue.The entry fee is $20 if postmarked on or before July 15. After that date, the fee is $25.
Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in each age group. The awards ceremony will be held as soon as the last runner crosses the finish line and times are recorded.

Pow Wow Days 5K: The 3rd annual Tiskilwa Pow Wow Days 5K Run/Walk will be held Aug. 3. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. at East Park in Tiskilwa.

PHS running nights: Any Princeton High School student interested in cross country this Fall or aerobic training for other sports is invited to meet at the Zearing Park shelters on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through Aug 2. The Monday and Friday runs will be in the evenings at 6:30 p.m. The Wednesday runs will be in the mornings at 9 a.m. The distances to be run at each session will be determined by each athlete’s experience and fitness level.
Starved Rock Runners clinic: The Starved Rock Runners Club’s running clinics will be held at 6 p.m. at Baker’s Lake every Monday until Aug. 12.
