Looking for some blind luck

The big event for this week will be the duck blind drawing at Oak Grove Park on Route 29 just west of DePue. Hunters who are interested in participating in this year’s duck and goose season need to be there in person Sunday for a chance to get a duck blind to hunt on Lake DePue/Spring Lake.

In order to be eligible at the drawing, one must have a current Illinois hunting license and Illinois duck stamp or last year’s hunting license and duck stamp. Hunting licenses and duck stamps will not be sold on site.

Registration is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. The drawing is at 2 p.m. Those participating need to have a current FOID card.

This is not only a duck blind drawing, but it is a good summer time social event. There will be raffles featuring guns, decoys and other wildfowl equipment before the drawing. Hunters get together and talk about last season, a new gun they just bought or a new lab they recently purchased. Many people will have their grills fired up featuring duck kebabs for their friends to sample. All in all, it should be a good time.

Speaking of good food, The Spring Valley Walleye Club is having another fish fry. It will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Barto Landing Mule Barn. Bluegills, crappie and walleye will be served.

Recently, a 4-year-old girl caught a 29-inch walleye in the wares below the dam at Lake Shabbona. It weighed in at just under 10 pounds. Her dad helped her with the landing net.

Another huge event that is just around the corner is the Grand American Trap Shooting competition. This features the best trap shooters from the United States, and actually, the world. They shoot in different events of 100 or 200 clay pigeons.

The winner or winners usually hit 100 birds, and then they have a shootoff til someone misses. Their accuracy is amazing.

The Grand American is Aug. 3-17 at the Illinois Shooting Complex in Sparta. It is worth the trip to see the best shooters in the world.
