Reagan statue effort underway

DIXON — From 1926 through 1932, Ronald Reagan worked as a lifeguard at the beach along the Rock River in Lowell Park near Dixon. Now Dixon May Jim Burke is spearheading efforts to create, design and construct a 7-foot bronze statue of a young Ronald Reagan overlooking the beach site and river in the park.

The well-known photo of Reagan in his lifeguard shirt is the beautiful 200-acre park was taken by a Dixon lady now deceased. A core committee of Dixon residents has met with sculptors and representatives of Rottblatt-Amrany Studio of Highwood. The studio is nationally known for sculpting statues of Michael Jordan in front of the United Center in Los Angeles; Harry Carey, Wrigley Field; and Vince Lombardi, Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wis. The estimated Reagan statue cost is $120,000 with design, casting and construction to take 10-12 months.

Lowell Park is a national historic site and the Rock River is a national river trail with three miles of frontage through the center of Dixon.
