Newcomer Gillan leads IV Men’s Open

Newcomer Ben Gillan is the leader after the first week of the Illinois Valley Men’s Open, carding a two-over-par 74 at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Course.

Gillan, a 2008 Monmouth-Roseville graduate and 2012 alum of St. Ambrose University, has a one-shot lead over Troy Bauer and a three-shot lead over Jeremy DeBernardi with a 77. The only other golfer to break 80 was J.T. Thompson with a 79. Twenty-five golfers were in the champion class with 75 participating in the tournament that ends Sunday at Mendota Golf Course.

Spring Creek Junior League: The 2013 Spring Creek Junior League winners have been announced.

Dedication awards went to Payge Pyszka, Jaycee Pyszka, Nathan Potthoff, Nolan Doyle, Joe Toner, Jonathan Alter, Austin Torri, Ali Ciucci, Alyssa Torri, Ian Roach, Trenton Acuncius, Gracie Ciucci, Logan Potthoff, Peyton Pyszka, Nathaniel Mrowicki, Mackenzie Mrowicki, Elliott Quartucci, John Potthoff and Matthew Hoscheid.

In boys 6-8, Logan Potthoff of Spring Valley had 16 points, while Payge Pyszka of LaSalle had 13 points in girls 6-8.

In boys 9-11, Nathan Potthoff of Spring Valley had 19 points; Ian Roach of Hennepin had 16. In the girls 9-11, Ali Ciucci of Granville had 13 points with Gracie Ciucci of Granville having 10 points.

In boys 12-13, John Potthoff of Spring Valley had 17 points. Matthew Hoscheid of Cherry had 14. In the girls 12-13, Missy Mertes of Oglesby had 7 points.

In the boys 14-17, Joe Toner of LaSalle had 14 points, while Ryan Ott of Spring Valley had 11. In the girls 14-17, Gabby Mendoza had 11 points, while Stephanie Wilson of Granville had 7.

IVWGI: The Illinois Valley Women’s Golf Invitational will be held Aug. 11 at Edgewood Park Golf Course in McNabb. Hunter’s Ridge Katie Farrell is the defending champion. Call Edgewood at 815-882-2317 for more information.

Doug Hoffman Memorial: The fourth annual Doug Hoffman Memorial Golf Outing is Aug. 24 at Hidden Lake Golf Course in Sheffield. It is held to celebrate the life of Doug Hoffman, who passed away from cancer on June 24, 2009.

The four-person scramble will have a noon shotgun start. Cost is $50 per person which includes 18 holes, cart and a meal. All proceeds will benefit Spring Valley Hospice. Donations are accepted.
