St. Matthew’s wins regular season title

PRINCETON — St. Matthew’s won the regular season championship of the Princeton Fastpitch League and will head into this week’s tournament with the No. 1 seed.

St. Matthew’s downed Bureau Township 5-2 behind the pitching of Brad Snethen, who went seven innings, gave up 10 hits, three strike-outs and two earned runs. Bureau Township’s Jeremy House took the loss, throwing six innings, walking six, striking out three, giving up six hits.

Bureau Township scored once in the first inning when Logan Wilde led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly to right field. Dylan Ohlson, Methodist player subbing in for Bureau Township, hit an inside the park homer to right field in the third inning.

St. Matthew’s scored once in the first when Tim Forristall walked and scored on Matt Cochran’s double

Eric Waca led off the fourth inning with a double, and Matt Cochran walked. Justin Harris laid a bunt down for a base hit to load the bases. Dayton Ince singled up the middle to score Waca, while Cochran was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Andy Dye then tripled to score Harris and Ince. Brad Snethen had a fielder’s choice to score Dye.

In other action, Bunker Hill beat The People’s Church 16-5; St. Louis edged People’s Church 11-10; and United Methodist Church beat Princeton Bible Church 7-1.

UMC finished the season with a 7-2 mark and earned a No. 2 seed in the tournament, since St. Matthew’s beat them the last time the two teams played during the regular season.

Princeton Bible with its 5-4 mark earned the third seed. Bureau Township was seeded fourth with a 4-5 mark.

Bunker Hill got the fifth seed after finishing 4-5. St. Louis got the sixth seed with a 4-5 mark, and People’s Church got the seventh seed with a 1-9 mark.

As of press time depending on the weather, the league’s tournament was set to start Monday night with Bunker Hill playing Bureau Township at 6 p.m. followed by St. Louis battling Princeton Bible Church at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday scheduled action pits the losers of Monday’s games playing each other at 6 p.m. followed by the People’s Church against UMC at 7:30 p.m.

Friday night’s action in the winner’s bracket pits the winners of Monday night’s games at 6 p.m. with the winner of Bunker Hill-Bureau Township against No. 1 seeded St. Matthew’s at 7:30 p.m.

Action continues through Aug. 17 in the double-elimination tournament played at West Side Ball Park in Princeton.
