GRANVILLE – Putnam County didn’t take long to find its man.
Joey Ohnsorge was hired as the new athletic director/varsity baseball coach at Putnam County High School during Monday’s emergency session of the PC School Board. His hiring comes just seven days after Dave Garcia resigned from both positions to become head baseball coach at Parkland College.
Putnam County Superintendent Jay McCracken said Principal Bob Peterson devoted numerous hours to the hiring of Garcia’s replacement.
“There were more than 30 outstanding applicants for this position, and Putnam County is fortunate to have made an excellent selection among those fine applicants,” McCracken said.
Ohnsorge was the principal consultant for school health at the Illinois State Board of Education in Springfield. He served as assistant principal at Glenwood High School in Chatham. His educational experience has covered the past 22 years and includes 20 years as a varsity baseball coach.
Ohnsorge will also be covering in-school suspensions.
Peterson said Garcia told PC on Aug. 2 he was leaving and resumés came in within three days after the job was posted.
“Coach O has plenty of credentials for the job. He was familiar with the program as we have played in his area in southern Illinois in the fall before,” Peterson said.”
Chris Newsome was hired as assistant coach.
