Lady Lions win opener

The LaMoille/Ohio Lady Lions had a winning debut in the 2013 volleyball season, defeating Serena 25-17, 25-23 in a nonconference opener at LaMoille Tuesday.

"It is was hot one but the girls didn’t use that as an excuse and played well. It was nice to get a win under our belts,” L/O coach Hallie May said. “I thought sophomore setter Rae Schultz had a strong varsity debut and our back row was anchored by Ragen and Vanessa. Our hitters placed the ball well and played aggressivly up front. Shiela and Elizabeth Geuther were a nice presence. Serena kept us on our toes with tough serving but I thought we handled that well."

The Lady Lions were led by Rae Schultz (10 points, 1 ace, 2 digs), Emily Fahs (2 digs), Elizabeth Geuther (1 block, 2 kills), Shiela Browning (3 points, 3 aces, 1 dig, 4 kills), Ragen Forbes (7 points, 9 digs), Vanessa Martinez (4 points, 4 aces, 5 digs, 1 kill) and Alyssa Martin (3 kills).

LaMoille/Ohio won the freshmen match 18-25, 25-23, 16-14 behind Paige Conner (8 points, 2 kills, 2 aces, 7 assists), Riley Johnson (6 points, 5 kills, 5 aces, 3 digs), Alana Cherry (4 kills), Katy Anderson (7 points, 2 aces) and Hannah Pinter (4 points, 4 aces).

Serena took the sophomore match 26-24, 21-25, 26-24. Conner had 14 points and 14 assists, Johnson eight kills, Cherry four kills and Pinter five points and three aces in defeat.
