LASALLE — Under the artistic leadership of Lucia Matos, the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra presents a yearly series of concerts designed to entertain, educate, enlighten and inspire people of the Illinois Valley area.

The orchestra strives to present a varied and musically pleasing array of orchestral music, while providing opportunities to stimulate musical growth and curiosity.

Music director and conductor Lucia Matos welcomes everyone to IVSO’s 64th season. “We hope you will find new meanings in familiar orchestral works and discover new pieces that you will come to love.”

The season will begin with the traditional Pops concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Princeton High School auditorium, when Princeton native Nicholas Towns, pianist, returns to his alma mater to perform Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The entire concert will celebrate Americana with popular works the whole family will enjoy.

The Oct. 27 concert will include acclaimed mezzo-soprano Orna Arania in a performance of Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer.” Also on the program is Schumann’s Symphony No. 3.

The Roman Carnival Overture by Berlioz and performances by winners of the 2014 Young Performers Competition will be featured on March 1, 2014, and violinist Kam-Lung Cheng will join the IVSO in May for the season finale.

On Dec. 14 and 15, the IVSO will present two performances of the time-honored holiday-season ballet “The Nutcracker,” which will be produced in collaboration with dancers from Dance Center, Gray’s School of Dance, Ottawa Dance Academy and Parkside Concert Choir (Peru). Please note that priority reserved seating for “The Nutcracker” performances is given to IVSO season subscribers.

Concert patrons can keep up to date with the happenings of the IVSO through the symphony’s website, www.ivso.org. The website lists upcoming season performances, ticket prices, educational opportunities, information about the conductor and special fundraising events sponsored by the IVSO. Patrons can also be kept abreast of the season performances by being placed on the IVSO mailing list. To do so, email orchinfo@ivso.org with your request.
