Pie contest

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Home & Community is sponsoring a "Make It With Lard" pie-baking contest during the Homestead Festival Pork Days. The contest will take place Sept. 14 at Soldiers & Sailors Park.

There is no limit to how many pies can be entered, but prizes are limited to one per person. The pies must be a two-crust fruit pie, and the crust must be made with lard. Each pie should be in a disposable pan. Recipes for the crust and the filling must be submittied with the pie. Names cannot be included on the recipe cards Pies should be brought to the park by 9 a.m. Saturday.

Judges will determine the four top winners and award prizes for gift certificates for pork products from Wyanet Locker. All pies, starting with the winners, will be auctioned off at noon at the park.

There will be a youth category as well for entrants 18 and under. Cash prizes will be awarded in this category

There is no advance entry requirement and no entry fee. The contest is open to everyone. For more information, call Melvina Lewis at 815-875-3119.
