Wow! There was a lot going on around the county last weekend, and of course, this upcoming weekend will also hold a mountain of fun as the annual Homestead Festival rolls out the red carpet for another exciting event. Historically, Homestead weekend is when many folks return to the area for their class reunions, so it’s always good to catch up with those we haven’t seen in a while.

As always, the Homestead Committee plus a plethora of volunteers have planned a weekend full of activities for folks of all ages. Yep ... there will be a ton of traffic in town, but that’s just part of it. I hope you’ll be able to take in some of the Homestead fun. Enjoy every minute of it, for it only comes around once a year.

As of press time, nobody has found the Heartland Medallion yet. I saw tons of people out looking for it during the weekend. Actually, I saw many families searching together, and I thought what a neat activity it was for those families to do on their weekend.

I wonder who the lucky winner will be? Check the BCR for the final clue on Thursday (unless it’s been found by then). We’ll also let you know when the lucky person finds this medallion. Keep searching. It’s out there somewhere ...

We’re just about ready to announce the Illinois Valley Living Magazine’s Women of Distinction winners — 10 well-deserving women of the Illinois Valley, who clearly have made a difference in the lives of others. Also, tickets for the luncheon to honor them and all women will be on sale soon. Mark your calendars for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 17, which is when we’ll meet at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby for a fun-filled luncheon, complete with lots of fun, great food and camaraderie. Princeton’s own Kathy O’Malley is our keynote speaker, so you know it will be a great time! Hope to see you there.

Speaking of Kathy O’Malley, you’ll be pleased to know she will be returning to WGN with Judy Markey for their ever-popular “Kathy and Judy Show.” There’s been a lot of chat about it on the street, so I spoke with Kathy this morning to confirm all the details. The popular Chicago-based radio show will premier from 9 to noon this Friday on WGN with a Best of the Kathy and Judy Show set for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. After that, the show will run every Saturday, beginning Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Need a smile? Tune in to hear our own Kathy O’Malley every Saturday ... after you read the BCR, of course!

Thought for the day for all those folks with class reunions this weekend: “Let’s just be fabulously where we are and who we are. You be you, and I’ll be me — today and today and today — and let’s trust the future to tomorrow. Let the stars keep track of us. Let us ride our own orbits and trust that they will meet. May our reunion be not a finding, but a sweet collision of destinies!” Jerry Spinelli.

Who went to a high school football game last Friday night? Please go and help support your local teams and athletes. I know the players, the cheerleaders, the band — all of the kids involved — enjoy seeing their fans in the stands. Keep track of all our sports coverage in the BCR.

Thanks to all of you who came to my first book signing at Hornbaker Gardens’ Artisan Fair on Saturday. It was so fun to see so many friends and make some new friends too. I’ll also be signing books on the lawn next to the Prouty Building from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday and from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday — while supplies last.

It won’t be long before these wonderful summer days turn into fall. Enjoy the tail-end of your summer with family and friends. And remember ... you are important to me and the BCR.
