Sexton takes a ride with motocross

LAMOILLE — Motocross has taken Chase Sexton from LaMoille to Tennessee and to the Czech Republic this summer.

The 12 year old from LaMoille has had a busy summer, chasing down second-place trophies from the Loretta Lynn American Motocross Association National Championships in the 85cc age 12-14 class and fourth-place awards for his most recent performance in the Czech Republic at the FIM World Championships.

Sexton’s fourth-place score in the age 12-14 85cc class was used in the U.S. National teams overall tally as it was the team’s high score.

“I had one of the scores that was used (overall), and (the U.S. team) took home medals and trophies; so it felt pretty good,” Sexton said.

Comparing the two competitions, Sexton said, “(The World Championship) was pretty different. I mean, they’re a lot bigger over there. The people over there were good at riding (hard-packed) tracks. They were really fast, but I knew when I was going over there that they were going to be fast. It was a lot harder and faster than it is at one of our races ...

“Loretta’s is a big race, but over there, it was huge,” he said. “Here it was a lot easier because here they are fast, but they’re not all fast. Over there, they’re all fast. It was a lot harder to catch up if you got a bad start.”

Regarding the travel, Sexton said, “At first I did not like flying, but after eight hours on a plane, I got used to it.”

Next up for Sexton is the Monster Indy Cup in Las Vegas on Oct. 19 where he will be riding a larger 112cc bike.

“It’s a really big race, and it’s on television,” Sexton said, adding that he wanted to thank his sponsors which include local supporters Sunset Ridge.
