Princeton has won the Coal City Invitational tennis tournament so many years in a row now, the Coal City coach asked the Tigresses if they wanted a trophy case instead of the trophy.

The Tigresses won the event for the eighth year in a row, defeating the host Coalers 145 games to 104. Mendota finished third with 94 and East Aurora fourth at 14.

Both singles players made a clean sweep. Jen O’Neil won the maximum of 30 games with a 10-5, 10-1 and 10-0 wins. At No. 2 singles, Courtney Webb followed suit with 10-0, 10-7 and 10-1 wins.

The No. 2 doubles team of Laura Behrends and Ellie Bonucci tallied the 30-game mark with scores of 10-4, 10-2 and 10-4. The No. 3 doubles also put up 30 wins with Emma Reidner and Megan Smith posting 10-1, 10-3 and 10-0 wins.

The PHS No. 1 doubles team of Brittany Krohn and Anjali Patel defeated Coal City (10-7) and East Aurora (10-0), but fell to Mendota’s Mary Brander and Kady Halbmaier 10-5 to finish second.

Dog days: In 2009, the PHS tennis squad had stuffed dogs as its mascot. This year’s tennis team has gone to the dogs, real dogs - Bella, belonging to Jen O’Neil, and Koda, who belongs to Ellie Bonucci. With Koda in attendance Saturday, PHS coach Connie Lind called it a “Dog Gone” good day for the Tigresses.

Senior Night: Princeton High School will host its tennis senior night Thursday prior to the Tigresses meet with Mendota. Seniors to be honored include Laura Behrends, Chloe Baron, Jessica Birkey, Fran Bowman, Tiffany Deguzman, Lindsay Hartwig, Hannah Lund, Lexi Mink, Jen O’Neil and Courtney Webb.

IVCC defeated the College of Dupage 7-2 in its season ßopener
