Andy Puck is looking for all the 3A-4A competition he can find for his Princeton Tigress volleyball team. On Saturday, they found it at Rock Falls Invite.
The Tigresses defeated the host Lady Rockets 17-20, 20-7 and 17-16 in pool play and squared off against Rock Island in the finals, falling 25-16, 25-8 to place second.
PHS coach Andy Puck said Rock Island was the best team PHS has faced in five years, but the Tigresses played aggressive and went right at the much taller Rocky lineup.
PHS (6-1) went 3-0 in pool play, defeating Morrison 20-15, 13-20, 15-8; Bureau Valley 20-16, 20-14; and Rock Falls. They knocked off Sterling Newman 25-20, 25-12 in the semifinals. The loss to Rock Island was the first of the season for PHS after winning their first six matches.
“The kids played well as everyone of our 15 were able to make a contribution,” Puck said. “We had a great day from our seniors and their leadership really pulled us through pool play and the tournament round. We expect to be in the finals, and we were able to execute. It was a solid day.”
Leaders on the day for the Tigresses were Michelle Kelly (88 assists, 22 digs, 4 aces), Alicia Poss (29 kills, 4 blocks), Ashley Farraher (28 kills, 22 digs, 25 points), Becca Hult (20 kills, 5 blocks, 19 points) and Mollie Bates (29 digs, 35 points, 6 aces).
Bureau Valley placed fifth over. The Storm went 1-2 in pool play with a 22-21, 21-7 win over Rock Falls and losses to Morrison (20-17, 8-20, 12-15) and Princeton. The Storm gained a 20-14, 20-13 win over Indian Creek to claim fifth.
Leading contributors for the Storm were Sydney Lebahn (6 points, 5 kills, 63 assists), Lindsey Hoffert (18 points, 6 aces, 23 kills, 9 digs), Valerie Reuter (20 points, 13 kills, 22 digs), Lacey DeVenney (11 points, 2 aces), Ali Siltman (8 kills, 3 blocks), Carlie Bickett (9 kills, 3 blocks) and Nicole Bornsheuer (5 kills, 3 blocks).
