Wayne’s world of trap shooting

I had a nice chat with Wayne Hassler the other day as I wanted to get his results from the Grand American Trap Shoot. The best shooters from the United States and world meet in Sparta for 11 days of trap shooting.

The first day, he shot a 99, but others shot 100s. The second day in AA singles he shot a 100, but so did others. This carried over to the next day where he shot a 98 and lost.

The fifth day, he was chosen along with four others to be on the Illinois team and placed third.

The sixth day in AA singles, he shot a 100 and a 98. Still didn’t win. Others shot 100s to win the event.

Then he travelled to Ackley, Iowa, to compete in the Heartland Grand. The first day, he won the handicap shoot with a 96 and shot a 98 in singles and tied. It carried over to the next day and shot a 100. This won the previous day event plus that day also.

The third day, he shot a 95 in AA singles and tied. The next day, he shot another 95 and won it and the previous day also.

The fourth day, he shot a 99 in AA singles which tied him. He lost on the carryover. He did, however, win the handicap with a 96. He won the handicap on the seventh day with a 96.

Earlier in late summer, he won the Chillicothe handicap.

Wayne told me this has been his best year ever. He has broken eight rounds of 100 and several 99s. He will continue to shoot as long as the weather holds out. He competes with the best in the world and holds his own. I’d say Princeton is lucky to have Wayne represent them in all these trap competitions.

• I just returned from a Ducks Unlimited meeting to get information about the upcoming DU banquet. There will be the usual great items and food at the Oct. 5 banquet held at the Bureau County Metro Center. The doors will be open at 5:30 p.m. for people to walk around and look at the various items. The dinner will commence at 7 p.m., and the auction will take place at 8 p.m.

When you buy a dinner ticket, you will be eligible to win a door prize shotgun if you wear either a camo shirt or camo pants. It is a Winchester Super-X pump.

The dinner gun is a beautiful Fausti over/under 12 gauge that is engraved. It has a 28-inch barrel with walnut stock. It has a silver receiver with gold inlay. It comes with a deluxe hard case.

The new item for this year is a calendar of guns that is only for Illinois. When you purchase this calendar, you will be eligible to win a firearm on Monday, Wednesday or Friday for the entire year. The winners are chosen by the Illinois Pick Four method, and your ticket is put back in the drawing. Therefore, you can continue to win. I am excited about this.

Mark your calendar down for Oct. 5. Purchase your ticket early by contacting any committee member.

• The Spring Valley Walleye Club is hosting a Vet’s Fishing Day Saturday. Sign-in will be held from 8-8:45 a.m. at Barto Landing. SVWC President Bill Guerrini says they are expecting approximately 60 vets to participate. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
