Princeton Coffeehouse will feature folk duo The Cantrells on Saturday

Emily and Al Cantrell

PRINCETON — The Cantrells, a popular folk duo, will appear at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Coffeehouse venue is at the Open Prairie United Church of Christ, 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton.

Al and Emily Cantrell perform original acoustic folk and bluegrass music along with Celtic, western swing and traditional American tunes. The Cantrells have been touring and performing in concerts and festivals since 1985. They are currently based in Nashville.

Emily Cantrell sings in a fluid, jazzy style reminiscent of Joni Mitchell while her husband Al Cantrell plays off his wife’s Martin guitar with fiddle and mandolin.

Their performances feature Emily’s songs, her strong rhythm guitar (especially her swing style) and Al’s contest-winning fiddling in traditional, swing and Irish styles. Their duets include a wide variety of songs from bluegrass to Broadway musicals.

The duo has received a lot of radio play and have become National Public Radio favorites. “Emily simply has a beautiful voice – a velvety, expressive, rich soprano in a class with the best artists,” says Bluegrass Unlimited. According to the Nashville Tennessean, “she sings like an angel, he plays like the devil.”

Robert Redford chose the Cantrells to play music on screen in his hit movie, “A River Runs Through It.”  Their 4 CDs include the talents of Bela Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Jerry Douglas and members of Riders in the Sky.

The Cantrells’ performance at the Princeton Coffeehouse is sponsored by Jon McCutchan, Bureau Valley Vision Care.

The Princeton Coffeehouse offers a full season of traditional and modern folk, blues and bluegrass music from August through May. Season subscriptions are available. A single show admission is $12 at the door.

Open Prairie is completely accessible and there is ample free parking nearby. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Fair trade coffee, tea, and homemade desserts are available.
