WALNUT — The Walnut Village Board heard the annual audit report at its monthly meeting this week.
Joe Birkey, village auditor for Walnut, presented the audit report for the fiscal year ending April 30, 2013.
Birkey reported some revenue generating items have decreased in 2013. Those decreases include $9,634 less in property tax collected. Increases include $11,682 in sales tax, $12,215 increase in state sales tax and $34,000 received from the newly-enacted gas tax and electricity tax. These last two taxes have only been in effect for five months. During the next fiscal year, these taxes will be in effect for 12 months and should bring in additional revenue to the Village.
Also stated in the auditing report was the information the village has decreased several expenditures including general government, public safety, cemetery and miscellaneous. The miscellaneous expenditure decrease includes a decrease in insurance premiums obtained by changing health insurance providers.
One negative Birkey noted was the assessed valuations of real estate within the village decreased slightly in 2012. If this trend continues, the village will see less revenue received from real estate taxes.
In other business, Grobe said one sealed bid had been received on the Hansen property. The bid from Ronald and Barb VonHolten in the amount of $3,100 was the only one received. The board agreed to the sale of this property to the VonHoltens for that amount.
Carl Minks, village superintendent, reported the water leak his department has been dealing with for several months has finally been located, and the needed repairs have been made. Repairing this leak immediately decreased the amount of water being pumped by the village. Minks also reported there is a collapsed storm drain line in the area of Main Street. This line will need to be repaired and will require 400 feet of piping to be replaced. The board voted to have Minks install this new line as soon as possible.
Village Clerk Tiffany Pistole said the Knights of Columbus will be holding their Tootsie Roll sale charity drive on Saturday, Sept. 21.
