Benavidez pleads guilty to heroin felony

PRINCETON – A Princeton man has been sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to the Class 1 felony of unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, heroin.

Nathan D. Benavidez, 28, entered his guilty plea Sept. 20 before Circuit Judge Marc Bernabei. Benavidez was sentenced to seven and one-half years in prison and ordered to pay fines, fees and court costs totaling $2,022 within one year of his release from prison.

On May 9, the TRIDENT task force received information that Benavidez would be returning to Bureau County from Chicago with a large amount of heroin. Based on this information, a traffic stop was performed on the vehicle in which Benavidez was a passenger. The police recovered about 68 bags containing a white powdery substance on and around Benavidez within the vehicle. Twenty-five of those bags were analyzed by the crime lab and determined to be 5.7 grams of heroin.

Benavidez had been previously convicted of unlawful possession of a controlled substance in 2012 in Cook County, in 2009 in Bureau County and in 2009 in Cook County. He was also convicted of attempted residential burglary in 2003 in Henry County.
