Ronald Nelson

GENESEO — Ronald W. Nelson, 57, of Geneseo passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at his home.

Ron was born on April 8, 1956, in Princeton, the son of Carl and Mabel (McAtee) Nelson. He graduated from Manlius High School in 1974 and went to the University of Illinois where he earned an agricultural engineering degree in 1978. He was united in marriage to Kelly K. Oloffson on June 11, 1977, in Manlius. Ron worked as an engineer for 33 years at John-Deere Harvester Works in East Moline.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Geneseo. Ron was also a member of the Joyfull Hearts Worship and Praise Band at First Lutheran. He coached baseball and basketball teams for his sons in their youth. Ron also thoroughly enjoyed accompanying his daughter Tracie to her horse shows and would do all the grooming on the show days for her. Ron enjoyed playing guitar and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Kelly; one daughter, Tracie (Brian) Douglas of Geneseo; two sons, Peter (Natalie Winter) Nelson of Peoria and Tim (Laura) Nelson of Naperville; four grandchildren, Hayden, Baylie and Joshua Douglas, and Claire Nelson; two brothers, Robert (Judy) Nelson of Michigan and Richard (Ka) Nelson of Washington; three sisters, Nyla (Roy) Wachter of Washington, Ind., Nancy (Jim) Hopkins of Oregon, Ill., and Norita (Steve) Cunningham of Sugar Grove; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Geneseo with the Rev. Dr. Arthur Bergren officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

A visitation for Ron will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd, Geneseo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the Ron Nelson Memorial Fund.
