Library renews film series honoring Richard Widmark

PRINCETON — A new series of Widmark Wednesday films, starring Princeton’s own Richard Widmark, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Princeton Public Library, 698 E. Peru St.

Admission is free.

In Wednesday’s movie, Widmark stars as a lawyer who unwittingly becomes entangled in a wanted mob boss’s dangerous scheme to flee the country.

Also starring are Lee J. Cobb, Lorne Greene (Ben Cartwright of “Bonanza” fame) and Tina Louise (Ginger on “Gilligan’s Island”).

Before the movie begins, Princeton artist Bart Kassabaum will speak about “The Widmark Look,” his artistic tribute to Richard Widmark’s career and his Princeton connections.

Additional movies will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30 in the library’s audio-visual room.

The Widmark Wednesday film series recognizes Widmark, a former Bureau County resident, 1932 Princeton High School graduate and Academy Award nominee.

Widmark appeared in more than 70 movies from 1947 until 1991.

The centennial of his birth will be in 2014. Widmark died in 2008.
