SPRING VALLEY — Hall High School held a ceremony for its 2013 Hall of Fame class before squaring off with the Rockridge Rockets Friday night. Inductees included members of the 1946 football team, the 1997-98 basketball team, former coach Bob Jiles, former players and brothers Harold Meek and Ken Meek and friends of the school Lou and Lori Guerrini.
The attendees included three members of the 1946 football team: Jerry Sobin, Charlie Steinberg and Richard Mattioda. Steinberg said their team exemplified the times growing up in the Great Depression.
“Thanks to the committee for thinking of us (and) thanks to our teammates, a lot of whom are gone. We had to do this in a hurry because time is running out,” he said. “We had a lot of good times. We were born and raised in the Depression era. We played hard, we played together and we were friends. We hit each other but when we walked off the field we joked and laughed. That’s the way we played the game in those days. We will never forget.”
The ‘46 football team outscored its opponents by a whopping 159-7 allowing only one touchdown against Ottawa that season.
The 1997-98 Red Devils basketball squad went 32-1 suffering its only loss in the state championship game in Peoria. Former coach Eric Bryant spoke for members of the team.
“This was a fun group. Believe it or not they did work hard. I can’t believe some of the things they did in the locker room, but, they were memorable,” he said.
Lou and Lori Guerrini were instrumental in getting Hall its all-weather track from inception, to planning and securing the needed funds. The Guerrinis thanked the committee and graciously accepted the crowd’s cheers as well.
Ken Meek was a stand-out athlete who earned All-state honors in track, baseball, football and basketball from 1948-52. Harold Meek was a member of the ’46 football team as well as a star player in track, baseball and basketball.
