Little Giants get rare taste of defeat
DEPUE — The DePue Little Giants met Peoria Christian Chargers on the soccer field Saturday morning facing what has been a tough match-up in the past. Despite the recent history of wide-margin losses, DePue came out swinging against the Chargers applying strong offensive pressure for nearly 40 minutes of the first half.
The Giants’ eight shot effort didn’t result in any points though, and the Chargers got on the bus with a 1-0 victory as PC goalie Josh Lehman met the challenge with eight saves. DePue senior goalie Hector Villagomez had 14 saves in the 15-shot Charger barrage.
“(Peoria Christian) is number one in their region. They have had a consistent program year in and year out…last year we lost to them nine to nothing, the year before it was eight to nothing, the year before that it was seven to nothing…we normally get slaughtered by that team,” DePue coach Tim Stevens said. “I’m just so happy we came out with the pressure, and we were able to keep up with a high level team.”
