Encore performance

Princeton took just four girls to the Aledo Mercer County 1A girls regional golf tournament Tuesday due to a late scratch and competed against full squads six-players deep. That was more than enough.

The Tigresses (420) placed third behind Geneseo (382) and Rock Island Alleman (411) to advance to sectionals for the second straight year. All three advance to the Monmouth Sectional on Monday at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth.

PHS beat out Rockridge by eight strokes for the final sectional spot.

"Once again our team overcame adversity and like our whole season has gone, we accepted the challenge head on and were able to persevere," PHS coach Will Gross said. "With a late scratch, we took only four girls to compete so each knew that they had to do everything in their power to shoot the lowest possible score to help our team advance to our second consecutive IHSA sectional."

PHS junior Sophia Suarez (97) placed fifth and sophomore Arraia Hicks (99) was eighth. Also scoring for the Tigresses were Audra Reidner (108) and Sarah Crowe (116). Gross said Suarez and Hicks played solid golf from beginning to end. Reidner got off to a slow start, he said, "but regained her composure and shot a very solid round." Crowe had a "fantastic front nine," and held on the back nine to post a score needed to advance the team.

"It was a proud moment for me to watch the girls play with the belief and confidence that it takes to succeed in the post season and continue to advance," Gross said. "Immediately after realizing we were going to advance, the girls focused their attention on what they need to improve on moving into next week and what it will take to compete at an opportunity to continue to advance." Monica Lieving of Geneseo was medalist at 84.

At McNabb: Host Putnam County (388) and St. Bede (430) placed 1-2 to advance from the Putnam County Regional Tuesday at Edgewood Park Golf Club. Beecher (437) also advances to the Gibson City Sectional along with DePue's Mercedes Ruiz, who advanced as the ninth individually with a 110. Woodland's Sarah Maddux was medalist at 82. Putnam County's Steph Wilson was runner-up with an 86 on her home course.

Other scorers for Putnam County were Carly Gonet (98), Monica Monroe (100) and Kelsey Grosenbach (104).

For St. Bede, Sydney Eustice had a 100, and sisters Gabby Mendoza a 100 and Aiko Mendoza a 108. Rachel Cessna (121) rounded out the Lady Bruins scorecard.

Hall's Amanda Scheri (121) missed the cut by three strokes. She had a two-stroke penalty for teeing off on the wrong hole along with her group, but coach Tom Bauer said she still would have been one shot short of advancing.

Monday's sectional will be held at Railside Golf Course in Gibson City. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com
