Lady Lions win LTC opener

LaMoille/Ohio opened the 2013 Little Ten Conference volleyball tournament with a 25-20, 25-15 win over host Leland/Earlville Tuesday.

Ragen Forbes led the Lady Lions with seven points and 12 digs, and Shiela Browning had a team-high 13 kills. Elizabeth Geuther added five kills and Rae Schultz had 13 assists.

The Lady Lions (14-4) will face Somonauk at 7 p.m. Thursday in semifinal play. Defending champ and top seed Newark defeated Paw Paw 25-17, 25-13.

Hall 2, Rockridge 0: The Lady Devils (4-24, 1-7) gained their first conference win in the Three Rivers Conference South Division, defeating the Lady Rockets 25-21, 25-19 at home Tuesday. First-year coach Megan Nation said it was a huge win for the Lady Devils.

“After talking the whole season about controlling the ball, making unforced errors etc., keeping our heads up and not falling apart after a few mistakes, they finally got it,” Nation said. “We were down the second set a few times by three, and we kept up then passed them. We have never done that before.

“We played relaxed and had fun. They were a whole different team. Played with so much confidence. I’m so proud of them.”

Shelbi Justi and Vanessa Olivares led the Lady Devils with five kills each. Brooke Keegan added four kills and 13 assists, Brenna Faletti had 11 digs and Lexi Piccatto had three aces.

Erie 2, Bureau Valley 1: The host Lady Cardinals sandwiched 25-17 and 25-19 sets around a Storm 25-18 win to claim Tuesday’s Three Rivers North match. Lindsey Hoffert had 10 kills and four digs, Heaven Bennett had seven kills and three blocks and Sydney Lebahn added 24 assists.

St. Bede 2, Sherrard 0: Coach Dawn Williams said her Lady Bruins (12-12, 4-3) played well in most areas of Tuesday’s match with the Tigers and it showed with a 25-13, 25-21 win at the Academy.

“We had well placed serves, strong net play and quick anticipation on digs helped us overcome Sherrard’s powerful hitters. Morgan Bosnich did an excellent job leading and distributing sets to create a balanced offensive attack,” Williams said.

Bosnich had 15 set assists to go with six kills, six digs and three aces. Olivia Mueller had a team high seven kills with Claire Dudek adding five. Emma Perona and Samantha Whalen each had seven points with Katie Joerger serving three aces.
