PRINCETON — A program on signature quilts was featured at the Princeton-Illinois Chapter NSDAR at the Prouty Building in Princeton on Oct. 4.  Signature quilts are those containing squares signed by people to remember a group or an event. Presenter Lenora Carey of Oglesby showed two signature quilts.

Regent Sharon Bittner called the meeting to order. Opening activities were conducted, followed by officers’ and chairmen reports.

Beverly Larson, chairman of the Vietnam War commemoration partner program, reported the paperwork has been submitted for the chapter to become a partner in the program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the war. A committee of four chapter members and three male volunteers will assist Mrs. Larson.

Chapter members will co-host a bingo party at the Veterans’ Home in LaSalle on Oct. 5 and assist veterans with bingo. A large donation of personal care items will be presented by the Princeton-Illinois Chapter. A collection was also taken for Honor Flight.

Members honored the memory of deceased member, Mary May, with a memorial service, also attended by five family members. May became a member in 2008 after a 30-year search for documents proving her link to Revolutionary War patriot, Samuel Appleton.

Commemorative Events Chairman Nancy Gillfillan reminded members to fly the flag on Columbus Day, Oct. 14, and discussed other days to remember.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2 at the Bureau County Republican’s Community Room. Members are asked to bring items for the food pantry. The program will commemorate the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address with recitation by Kimberly Glenn. Members will share mementoes and stories of Civil War ancestors.
