Bruins take the fifth

PERU — The St. Bede Bruins finally got one back in the win column Friday night against Orion.

St. Bede had lost two games in a row putting their playoff hopes in dire straits coming into the game. Thanks to some hard running from Michael Bellino and Justin Shaw the Bruins handily shut the Chargers down 34-22.

Bellino had four touchdowns and 109 yards on the ground while Shaw racked up 134 yards helping get the team within striking distance. Quarterback Jack Brady was steady with 154 yards through the air and one touchdown pass.

“We committed to (the run) this week simply because we saw their defense. They play double corner. They bang up on receivers and make it tough on you,” coach John Bellino said.

About the run game working so well Bellino added, “Obviously your offense line has to do a good job. Michael Bellino ran really hard. We played real hard. We knew we had to win this ball game.”

“Justin Shaw ran really hard and Jack Brady made some good plays…that’s a good ball club that we beat. I am proud of our kids for responding, especially since we’ve gotten knocked around the last couple of weeks,” Bellino added.

The game was by no means in hand from the start for the Bruins. After trading possessions a few times the Bruins struck first with about three minutes left in the first quarter. Orion answered and by the end of one the game was knotted up at 7. Orion got the ball back in no time and went up 14-7 early in the second quarter only to see Bellino cross the goal line again on a bruising 13-yard run. At halftime the squads were neck and neck at 14.

Bruin fullback Michael Bellino then proceeded to answer the call. He scored two unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter.

“The first half was a little shaky on a few things at halftime we just really focused up and brought it together. We played team defense and corrected a few mistakes we were making. We came together and we played hard. I can’t say enough about my team. The guys are really working hard out there,” Bellino said.

The Bruins will face off with Sherrard at home next week with their coach fully aware that five wins may not be enough to get a playoff berth.
