St. Bede junior Syndey Eustace warms up for the start of IHSA state golf competition Friday in Decatur.

DECATUR — St. Bede junior Sydney Eustice recorded a 99 in Friday’s opening day of the HSA 1A State Golf Meet at Red Tail Golf Course in Decatur, tied for 80th place.

St. Bede coach Rich Cummings said Eustice fought through some first-hole jitters teeing off No. 10 to play some steady golf . She went just 2 over on a tough five-hole stretch known by the locals as “Raymond’s Turn,” including three birdies, capped by a long putt to the edge of the cup on No. 17.

After the turn, Eustice loss six strokes on the par 4 fourth hole. She also found some trouble on No. 8 and had to take an unplayable lie.

Overall, Cummings said he was happy the way she played.

The final 18 holes will commence Saturday morning.
