Take a stand against RICL

A group of dedicated volunteers has been driving the country side trying to inform landowners and residents of an issue that threatens their rights and pocket books. Rock Island Clean Line (RICL), a private Texas investor group, plans to construct a DC high voltage transmission line across Iowa and Illinois. Their 200-foot easement in the 500-mile path crosses prime farm land in the area.

RICL is in the process of applying for public utility status through the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Due to the overflow crowd at the Sept. 18 open forum, the ICC has scheduled a second forum at 7 p.m. Monday at the Mendota High School Gym. ICC scheduled the event but it is up to us to notify the public.

It is important to show the ICC our united support against the RICL’s unneeded project. This will most likely be the last chance the public can make verbal comments. This is also an opportunity to submit a written statement. The ICC docket number 12-0560.

If the ICC grants public utility status this private group will seize land through eminent domain. We must not let a private group gain possession of personal land. We must protect our natural resources, our fertile land. This is just the first of many transmission projects proposed to crisscross the area with no coordinated plan, and it will set precedence. We must let it be known to the ICC our views on RICL (see website). We must pack the gym. This is an opportunity to make a stand.
