Bureau County teams exit postseason

The curtain has fallen on the 2013 season for Bureau County volleyball. All four remaining teams were eliminated from the postseason Tuesday.

At Paw Paw (1A): LaMoille/Ohio fell to Ashton-Franklin Center 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, finishing at 17-12. Shiela Browning had 14 kills with six digs and six points in her final night in the Lady Lion uniform. Alyssa Martin added 11 kills; Erin Bennet, 18 assists; and Rae Schultz, 14 assists.

At Annawan (1A): Just across Bureau County lines, the host Bravettes topped Williamsfield 25-20, 25-1. Megan Foes had 10 kills with seven points and four aces. Taylor Shaw added nine kills, and Kaila Dunfee added 11 points. Coach Caitlyn Corwin’s Bravettes (15-14) will square off against top-seeded Wethersfield, a 25-19, 25-15 winner over ROWVA, in Thursday’s regional finals at 7 p.m.

At Hall (2A): St. Bede was knocked out by top-seeded Fieldcrest 25-11, 25-16 in Tuesday’s regional semifinals. St. Bede coach Dawn Williams said Fieldcrest lived up its billing.

“Our girls put up a good battle, but we were over-matched,” she said. “It’s been a privilege to coach this group. It’s hard to believe the journey that began in June with summer ball has now come to a close for another season. Tonight we pack up all the equipment and take down the nets to make the gym ready for basketball season.”

On Monday, the Lady Bruins defeated Eureka 25-23, 22-25, 25-20. In the nightcap, Putnam County toppled host Hall 25-14, 25-22.

Tuesday’s second match saw El Paso-Gridley top Putnam County 25-15, 25-18. Fieldcrest and EPG will play for the title at 6 p.m. Thursday.

At Port Byron (2A): Top-seeded Bureau Valley was surprised by TRAC rival Prophetstown 29-27, 25-12 in Tuesday’s semifinals at Riverdale High School. The Storm bowed out at 15-13-2.

No. 3 Fulton defeated No. 2 Riverdale 25-18, 20-25, 25-16 to earn a title berth vs. Prophetstown at 7 p.m. Thursday
