If you didn’t notice, Jack Frost played a hard trick on us Saturday night, which left us waking up to more color on the trees than when we went to bed. Early Sunday morning and throughout much of the day, the leaves were dropping like crazy — offering us a carpet of yellow, orange and red on the ground.
Daylight Saving Time ended at 2 a.m. Sunday, and if you’re like me, my sleeping patterns are totally messed up. As I write this column on Monday at about 9 a.m., I’ve already been up for six hours. Doubtful I’ll make it to the 10 p.m. TV news tonight without falling asleep early, which means I’ll be up and at it early again in the morning. Is it just me, or do any of you have a sleeping issue with this time change? If it’s any consolation, Daylight Saving Time begins again on March 9, 2014!
I’ve noticed about a million geese flying over my house, presumably heading south for the winter. Likewise, there are just as many gathered around the pond out here by the Bureau County Republican office. Actually, they kind of creep me out.

Can you believe it’s already November? Whoa! Where did the year go? It won’t be long before we’ll be up to our elbows in holiday preparations. From your fragrant roast turkey to all the side dishes to that scrumptious dessert, the BCR would like to — once again — help you add some new recipes to your holiday recipe box.
Because it was so popular last year, the BCR will again publish its “A Homemade Holiday,” filled with recipes from you — our readers. Last year’s edition was so wonderful, and we’ve already had readers asking when this year’s special section will be published.
It’s really easy to participate. Without using any abbreviations (spell out words like tablespoon, ounces, etc.), type or print out your favorite holiday recipe(s). Make sure the directions to the recipe are complete and easy to understand. Include your first and last name, your hometown, your email and telephone number. (Your telephone and email will not be published.)
You can submit your recipe via a variety of venues, including by email at email@example.com. You can also use our online form at www.bcrnews.com/forms/recipe. You’re also welcome to mail your recipe to the BCR at P.O. Box 340, Princeton, IL 61356, or you can drop it off at our office at 800 Ace Road, Princeton. Keep in mind the BCR has an after-hours drop box at the rear of our building, where you can also deposit your recipe if our office is not open.
If you get your recipe(s) to us by 5 p.m. on Nov. 22, we’ll enter your name in a drawing for a $100 holiday baking basket filled with a plethora of goodies to help you with your holiday baking. The final deadline to submit a recipe is 5 p.m. Nov. 27. Absolutely no recipes will be accepted after that date. You’ll receive your “A Homemade Holiday” section in your newspaper on Dec. 14 — just in time to add some new recipes to your holiday meal preparations.
As long as we’re talking about the holiday, please try to shop locally when you can. It’s a win-win situation for everyone when you do!
