Newman ends Fieldcrest's ride early
Fieldcrest earned its first playoff appearance since 2008, going 8-1 as the Heart of Illinois Conference runner-up. The Knights playoff party, however did not last long, falling to four-time state champ Sterling Newman 41-0 Saturday in Minonk.
Newman racked up 257 yards on 48 carries, and its defense held Fieldcrest to 36 yards, 18 of them rushing and 18 of them passing.
“Our defense dug their feet in the trenches and held their ground for awhile,” Fieldcrest coach Nate Lorton told Shaw Media Service. “But we just spent too much time on the field as a defense. It wore our guys out, and that’s what the playoffs are about.”
The Comets (9-1) earned a trip home to host No. 1 Eastland-Pearl City (10-0) in second-round play.
Mercer County 33, Annawan/Wethersfield 6: Mercer County avenged its only loss of the season, defeating its Lincoln Trail rival in a big way Saturday at Kewanee. Mercer County will host top-seeded Rockridge (10-0). The Three Rivers South champion Rockridge beat Carthage Illini West 46-6 on Friday.
Seneca 21, Kewanee 14: Seneca (7-2) scored the gamewinner with 8:34 left in Saturday;s game. The Boillers (6-4) held a 14-13 lead at the half on Jared Nimrick's 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown and quarterback's David Washburn's one-yard run. Kewanee was denied twice inside the 10-yard line twice.
Oregon 22, Wilmington 21: The Hawks upset the top-seeded Wildcats with a touchdown and conversion run in the final 9.6 seconds Saturday in Wilmington. Oregon (6-4) drove 57 yards in the final 50.6 seconds for the upset.
