The postseason beat goes on for two area volleyball teams.
LaSalle-Peru and Fieldcrest both captured Super-Sectional crowns Saturday to advance to the IHSA State Finals at Redbird Arena in Normal this weekend.
At Washington (3A): The Lady Cavs rallied to top Champaign Centennial 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, to take the Super-Sectional crown in 3A.
The Lady Cavs (34-3) advance to the state finals for the first time since placing fourth in 1990. They will face Chicago Payton in the 3A semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Normal. Payton defeated Woodstock Marian 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 to win the Antioch Super-Sectional.
Setter Katie Olson tallied 31 assists, eight digs and nine points for L-P. Shana Puetz had a near triple-double with 11 points, 11 digs and nine kills.
Centennial coach Stan Bergman said his Chargers just couldn’t quite keep things going after their opening 25-16 first set win.
“We couldn’t have put together a better set. We made them play our way,” Bergman told the Champaign Gazette. “I don’t know if we took it for granted or LaSalle stepped up their game and did what they needed to work their way back into the match. We were right there. One less missed serve or one less something else and we could have been done and out of there in two sets.”
Friday’s late 3A semifinal pits Breese Central vs. Wheaton St. Francis at 6 p.m.
At Manlius: Fieldcrest rocked the Storm Cellar at Bureau Valley High School, defeating the Three Rivers Conference’s Fulton 25-23, 25-18 to earn their first trip to the sate finals.
The Lady Knights (33-4-1) will take on undefeated Albion Edwards County (35-0) at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The first 2A semifinal matches Elmhurst Immaculate Conception vs. defending 2A champ Deer Creek Mackinaw at noon
