WALNUT — Volmer “Brooke” Haurberg, 69, of Walnut died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at his home in Walnut.
Brooke was born Dec. 2, 1944, in Princeton, the son of Volmer and Katherine (Stowe) Haurberg. He was united in marriage to Kathy Penny on Aug. 31, 1968, in Babylon, N.Y. Brooke graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1970 and returned to his beloved Walnut where he became co-owner of Steel and Haurberg and Walnut Components, retiring in 2005.
Brooke was a diehard Cubs and University of Illinois fan. He was passionate about his hometown, Walnut, and was part of the chain gang for Walnut Blue Raiders football for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Haurberg; one daughter, Tara (Dave) Cook of Jacksonville, Ill.; one son, Clay (Megan) Haurberg of Clinton, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tayler Upton, Shae Upton, D.J. Cook and Lydia Haurberg; two stepgrandchildren, Austin and Abby Harper; one brother, Scott (Barbara) Haurberg of Walnut; one sister-in-law, Susan Penny of Niskayuna, N.Y.; his father-in-law, Rodney Penny of Northport, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to the Walnut Fire Department.
