Schmidt, Tigers trip Orion in overtime

The Princeton Tigers had been there just three days before, losing in overtime on a last-second shot Dec. 10 to Rochelle. This time, they reversed their fortunes.

Brenton Schmidt hit a shot at the buzzer in overtime Friday to lift the Tigers to a 57-56 win at Orion. Schmidt had his first shot blocked just off the lane near the block, but was Johnny on the Spot. He got the ball back and slid between two defenders and put in the game-winner from the block.  

PHS coach Jesse Brandt said Schmidt, who had finished with 10 points, had a nice game.

“I’m proud of the kids for stepping up with three starters fouled out,” Brandt said.

Leading scorer Garrett Duffin (19 points) fouled out along with Nate Duffy and J.J. Vaccaro.

Vaccaro finished with nine points and Zach Andersen and Zach Hicks added six each.

The PHS Kittens posted a 56-33 win in the sophomore contest behind Jake Reinhardt (20 points.

Bureau Valley 62, Amboy 43: The Storm took control of Friday’s Three Rivers North contest with leads of 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 31-14 at the half. Tommy Johnston led the Storm with 15 points with Parker Neuhalfen and Josh Mead adding eight each.

Winnebago 68, Mendota 40: James Carroll had 10 points for the Trojans, who fell to 1-1 in Big Northern Conference play and 5-2 overall.

Roanoke-Benson 70, Putnam County 68: The Rockets edged the Panthers in double overtime in Tri-County Conference play Friday. Kevin Fay led PC with 28 points.

Girls

LaMoille/Ohio 42, AFC 39: The Lady Lions entertained their fans at Ohio with a narrow nonconference win Saturday over the Raiders. Shiela Browning led the Lady Lions with 12 points and Samantha Martinez and Erin Bennett split 12 more.

Mendota 53, Oregon 40: The Lady Trojans posted a Big Northern Conference victory at Oregon Friday behind Ally Bromoschenkel (19) and Amy Devitt (18), who combined for 37 points.
