The St. Bede Lady Bruins made a game of it against rival LaSalle-Peru, but still came up short 50-43 at the Academy Saturday evening.

The Lady Cavaliers grabbed leads of 16-8 at the quarter break and 30-14 at halftime. The rivals played to an even 10-10 third quarter tie before the Lady Bruins caught fire in the fourth quarter. St. Bede outscored their guests 19-10 over the final eight minutes, but LaSalle-Peru hung on with 6 of 9 free throws by Jena Argubright.

“We just dug too big of a hole for ourselves by missing some shots and giving up too many points. It’s how you win the game – we have to score more and keep them from scoring,” St. Bede coach Tom McGunnigal said. “They shot a ton of free throws and our fouls kept us from any kind of rhythm”

Raley Mauck finished with a game-high 17 points for St. Bede (7-11).

Byron 53, Mendota 46: Amy Devitt had 18 points for the Lady Trojans, who were handed their first loss in Big Northern Conference West Division play Saturday.
