Meeting set

DEPUE — The DePue/Bureau County Democrats will “Salute Labor” at its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the DePue VFW Hall. A free chilli supper will be provided with music by the Henry Torpedo Boys. Everyone is invited to attend.

Red Nite Out

PRINCETON — The American Red Cross will host the Red Nite Out Auction and Dance on Saturday at the Ye Olde Underground Inn, South Sixth Street, Princeton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided by Two Twelve. Tickets can be purchased at: Sullivan’s Grocery Store, Spring Valley City Bank, Central Bank in Princeton, Princeton Chamber of Commerce and Citizens First State Bank of Walnut.

BCGS meeting

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Society library, 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. The public is invited to attend.

After a very brief business meeting, Patrick Hodge will present the program titled “Reverend Bertram A. Dickens: Bureau County Preacher and Nephew of Charles Dickens, the English Author.” Hodge, a local member and treasurer of BCGS, has researched deeply into the history of this minister and his connections to Charles Dickens. The Rev. Dickens served in northern Illinois for more than 40 years as a Methodist Episcopal minister with 14 of those years served in Bureau County.
