WALNUT — Howard P. Ernst, 91, formerly of Carlock, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. at Walnut Manor Nursing Home in Walnut.
Howard was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Carlock, to Charles and Luella (Naffziger) Ernst. He married Catherine Mae Rhoads on Sept. 22, 1949, in Meadows.
Howard graduated from Carlock High School in 1940. During World War II he served as a conscientious objector in Montana and New Jersey. Howard graduated from Illinois State University when it was known as ISNU (Illinois State Normal University) with an education degree in business. He was a painter and wall paper hanger alongside his father and brother for the Family Ernst Painting Service. He also served on the Carlock Village board and was a member of the Carlock Mennonite Church. Howard enjoyed gardening especially vegetables and roses.
Survivors include his children, Paul H. (Linda) Ernst of Princeton and Joan (Wesley) Drosdoski of Winnipeg, Canada; his grandchildren, Sasha (Nathan) Torkildson of Seattle, Wash., Sheridan (Jeff) Cavanaugh of Nashville, Tenn., and Clarissa and Collin Drosdoski of Winnipeg, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Catherine; and a brother, Karl Ernst.

A memorial visitation will be held at East Lawn Funeral Home in February.
