SPRING VALLEY — Basketball games just don’t get much tighter than this.

Rockridge took a 10-8 lead over the host Lady Devils and held the same margin at 20-18 at the half. The Rockets never led by more than four points the rest of the way, holding on for a 37-36 win in Three Rivers Conference South play at Red Devil Gymnasium.

Becca Herrmann put the Lady Devils in position to go for the win, stealing an inbounds pass and scoring to bring Hall within 37-36.

Hunter Galassi missed a driving shot with 12 seconds remaining. Rockridge’s Maddi Lape missed two free throws with 8.0 left, leaving the door open for Hall.

It all came down to Hall’s final possession, but the Lady Devils were unable to get a shot to drop. Hall coach Josiah Martin thought there should have been a foul called on Galassi’s last attempt, but did not get the call.

“I think there was three shots in the last possession, we just couldn’t get one to fall. That’s the way it goes. At least we had a chance,” Martin said. “I don’t want to blame it on the refs, but I thought there was a foul. Obviously, it’s a tough situation with the officials to be in. Do you call that last-second foul? Or do you not call the last-second foul.

“I thought there was, but of course I ended up on the short side. I was really hoping it would.”

Ellie Herrman tied the game at 20 with the first points of the third quarter with a hoop. Freshman Renee Barraso scored on a drive, Abby Azarskis knocked down a jumper from the left win and Emily Hoscheid sank two free throws to make it 28-26 at the end of the third quarter.

While they tried, the Lady Devils were unable to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Hoscheid hooped first followed by a basket by Ellie Herrmann to make it 32-30 with 4:40 to play. Becca Herrmann added two free throws and a putback to make it 35-34.

Becca Herrmann led the Lady Devils with 11 points and Hoscheid added eight.

“Rockridge is a tough team. There’s not doubt about that,” Martin said. “We lost to them by two points at their place. We lost by one point tonight. I was very proud of our effort and hanging with them.”
