Dolphins compete at Ottawa

OTTAWA — The Illinois Valley YMCA Dolphin swim team traveled to Ottawa on Jan. 18, where several Bureau County athletes contributed.

Princeton’s Caden Brooks, 10, earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:15.11. Brooks also pulled down two, fourth-place finishes with the 80 yard intermediate at 1:05.32 and the 40 yard freestyle event at 26.65.

Jack Devert, 9, of Ladd, took home a fourth-place finish in the 40 yard butterfly stroke with a time of 40.31. In the 40 yard breaststroke, he placed sixth with a time of 42.00. Devert also earned his team a seventh-place finish in the 80 yard intermediate with a time of 1:16.34.

Logan Griggs, 10, of Spring Valley took a fourth-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.75. Griggs took a sixth-place finish in the 40 yard backstroke at 43.73. In the 40 yard freestyle Griggs took seventh at 30.53.

Charleigh Holmes, 12, of Spring Valley took home three first-place finishes at the meet. In the 200 yard freestyle, Holmes clocked a time of 2:07.00. She swam in the 40 yard butterfly at 23.06 and finished her day in the 100 yard backstroke at 1:14.78.

Spring Valley’s Gunnar Jauch, 10, also took home three first-place finishes in the contest. In the 80 yard intermediate, he swam a 1:00.97. He turned around in the 100 yard freestyle and hit 1:09.32. Jauch then participated in the 40 yard breaststroke and timed in at 34.75. The freestyle event time was a state qualifier.

The Johll siblings from Spring Valley each swam in three events. Alex, 8, took a third in the 20 yard backstroke at 26.15, and fourth in the 20 yard freestyle at 22.72 and the 40 yard freestyle at 58.06. Ben, 12, took two, seventh-place finishes in the 40 yard backstroke at 44.31 and the 100 yard freestyle at 2:07.65. He finished efforts in the 40 yard freestyle where he took 12th at 41.12.

Princeton’s brother-sister duo Delaney, 9, and Nolan, 15, Mallery also swam for the Dolphins. Delaney took home two fourth-place finishes in the 80 yard intermediate at 1:23.97 and the 40 yard breaststroke at 42.50. She also placed fifth in the 40 yard freestyle with a time of 34.28. Nolan earned two secondplace finishes in the 40 yard freestyle at 23.72 and the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:33.53. Nolan took home a third-place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:37.66.

The next meet for the Dolphins will be at home Saturday vs. the Rockford and Ottawa YMCAs.
