Berneice DeRycke

SHEFFIELD — Berneice E. DeRycke, 92, of Sheffield passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at her home.

Berneice was born Jan. 19, 1922, in rural Sheffield, the daughter of Basil and Pelegie (DeMay) Christian. She was a 1939 graduate of Sheffield High School and was united in marriage to Noe “Bud” DeRycke on Aug. 17, 1946, in Sheffield. Berneice was a secretary for Brickyard Sheffield Shell Products and also assisted her husband “Bud” in farming in the Sheffield, Buda and Mineral areas.

Berneice was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheffield and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church where she was a past president and CCD teacher for 10 years. She also belonged to the Flemish American Club and the Mineral American Legion Auxiliary. Berneice served on numerous committees for events at the church and Legion. She was an avid Rolle Bolle and card player as well as a talented seamstress. She enjoyed making toys for grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Noe “Bud” DeRycke; two daughters, Linda (Stan) Lyon of Sheffield and Laura (Doug) Jury of Sparland; one son, John (Cheryl) DeRycke of Prophetstown; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Berneice was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Moorman and Irene Sierens; and one great-grandson, Noah DeRycke.

A funeral Mass celebrating Berneice’s life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheffield. The Rev. Mark Miller will celebrate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Sheffield.

A visitation for Berneice will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at the church.

Memorials may be left to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or the Sheffield/Mineral Rescue Squad.
